Electrolux Nimble – {Review}

November 22, 2011 · Posted in Household Products, Reviews · Comment

electrolux logoWe were delighted to try out the Electrolux Nimble. Like many homes these days we have carpeted areas and large areas of laminate. It’s tricky to find a floor cleaner that does both jobs well. We have carpet in Miss Button’s bedroom so it’s very important to us that we don’t sacrifice cleaning power in this room, but then the high traffic, most visible areas are mostly laminate.

The Nimble was most definitely put to the test in this household. We have our much loved cat and dog, plus an almost constant stream of friends and neighbours stopping by and more often than not, kids running around with cookies and other snacks. This vacuum was absolutely up to the test. It’s by far the most powerful vacuum cleaner I’ve ever used. I’ve also never had a floor cleaner that picked up this well on the laminate floor. I had resorted to doing it the old fashioned way and sweeping, sweeping and more sweeping. Hard to reach areas in corners and underneath our sofas looked neglected pretty quickly. (If you have little ones I would recommend not getting sofas with a 3 inch gap underneath). Problem no more.

The Nimble does an immaculate job on the hard floor. The carpeted areas come up just as perfectly as you would expect from an Electrolux product. There’s also no messing around when you need to switch from the hard floor to the carpet setting. One of our previous vacuums had a fiddly adjustment on the base that I never could get the hang of. The Nimble has a simple, one push, labelled button to switch from hard floor to carpet – I love this.

In fact the whole vacuum is easy and intuitive to use. Even if you hate reading instructions you should have no issues. I’m not exactly known for being mechanically minded and I had no problems whatsoever with any of the features or tools. The vacuum is bagless of course and the canister is super easy to remove. You’ll be pleased to hear that it has a sealed HEPA filter. The Versa-Tool is actually awesome and dare I say, fun to use. It was my first time using a vacuum with a light and I was pleasantly surprised at how handy it is for eyeing up stray debris and seeing exactly what you’re doing.

The Nimble is also incredibly easy to move around and the smooth swivel action is perfect. I’m 5 feet tall and have never won an arm wrestling contest. I really dislike it when any appliance that I use regularly is physically taxing. The Nimble is true to it’s name. For such a powerful cleaner, I didn’t have to over exert myself when I was using it.

Last but not least! The cord wraps up well. It may be small thing but it’s another bonus of this well designed floor cleaner.

The vacuum has a very nice overall design. It’s modern and cool looking without sacrificing functionality. It’s an absolute winner in our books and my floors have never looked better. We would highly recommend it!

The Electrolux Nimble is available at a variety of fantastic retailers, including: Canadian Tire, BestBuy and Sears.

We would like to thank Electrolux for allowing us to try out the Nimble vacuum cleaner. We were not compensated for this review.

There’s a certain type of Mom stress involved in having a bored, hungry, (soon to be crying…screaming?), little one in a stroller. The Cheerios are thrown to the ground and you’re picking up the squeaky toy for the 100th time? Not fun.

The Help {review}

August 10, 2011 · Posted in Movies, Reviews · 1 Comment

The Help movieI had the opportunity to watch an advanced screening of Disney’s new movie, The Help. The Help is based upon a novel by the same name that is situated in Jackson, Tennessee in the 1960s at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. As someone who studied this in university, I was quite interested to see how they portrayed this era and the problems that occurred in the South in both the book and the movie. I must say I was pleasantly surprised!

When I read The Help, I devoured it in two days – it is well written, interesting and the characters pull you in – it’s a book I have recommended many times and have given as a few gifts too. I’ll be honest, when I heard that they were making a movie based on the book, I was apprehensive, movies based on books tend not to be anywhere as good as the book. In this case, I was wrong – the movie is every bit as fabulous as the book.

There were even some parts and characters in the movie that I loved even more than the novel. The actors all played their characters extremely well and in my mind the movie characters were seamless with the characters in the novel, they were exactly what I had pictured and acted like when I was reading the novel.

I highly recommend seeing this movie, whether or not you have read the book, you will enjoy every minute of it. Just be prepared to laugh hard and shed an occasional tear.

Official Description:

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon,  “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s,  who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Costume Supercenter {review}

July 2, 2011 · Posted in Reviews, Toys · 2 Comments

What kid does not love Curious George? At our house, Curious George is the book to read every night before bed. So much so, curious george toddler costumethat we now own three different Curious George hardcover story collections – because let’s face it, moms and dads can only read the same story so many times.

With mr. bean turning two a few months back, he is now starting to get into dress up. Anything he can put on and run around in is a lot of fun. With this in mind, I am always on the lookout for different dress up items I can pick up here and there for him. For those of us in Canada, I always think of Mr. Dress Up’s tickle trunk. Given his love of Curious George, picking a Curious George costume was super easy.

When we received it, both of us were pretty happy! I find a lot of the kids costumes are not very user friendly and tend not to last after a few wears. But this one was made so well and has held up quite well too. I do have to help mr. bean a bit to get the costume on. But once it’s on, he’s raring around having fun!

If you’re looking to fill your dress up trunk or looking ahead for a Halloween costume, I recommend checking out the Costume Supercenter. They have a huge selection, ship quickly and the quality of their costumes are great. I am going to have a hard time picking out a cute costume for Halloween this year, there are so many costumes for toddlers to choose from!

Kemby Sidekick {review}

June 30, 2011 · Posted in Baby Products, Mama Stuff, Reviews · 2 Comments

Trying to find a carrier that works for babies and toddlers and allows you to carry all the gear you need together is not an easy product to find. Since mr. bean turned two, he does not want to go in his stroller any more, yet he needs breaks every once in awhile from walking. I must say I do miss a stroller’s capability for carrying all sorts of gear. Up until recently, I had to carry a diaper bag with all his snacks, diapers, sippy cups and such and then carry him for bits of time. Which is not easy.

I recently received a Kemby Sidekick bag/carrier to try out and I have never been so happy with a product! The bag is the perfect size for the stuff I have to carry around. But the best part is that when mr. bean gets tired from walking, the bag transforms into a carrier seat that I can then strap him into. For the carrier aspect, babies need to be able to have good head control to be able to use it.

I first tried it out at home and it did take me a couple of times before I got the hang of flipping the bag cover inside out and Kemby diaper bag carrierattaching it to me and figuring out how to get him in. Once I got him in, it was perfect! I only wish I had this bag when mr. bean was much younger. He is at the upper end of the weight limit, but it was still very easy to use and my back did not get sore at all. Now we never leave the house without it.

Here are some of the great features this bag has:

  • Versatile – wear over your shoulder, around your waist, or
  • across your shoulder.
  • Adjustable strap allows you to carry your baby on either hip
  • Baby-friendly fabric easily wipes clean.
  • Key clip, cell phone pocket, and many easily accessed pockets for essentials.
  • Double side pockets for bottles or sippy cups.
  • Removable insulated bottle/snack pouch and changing pad.
  • Designed for use by babies with good head control, weighing up to 35 pounds

The only downside to this bag is the size. It can fit a fair bit, but if you are having to carry around a few bottles, change of clothes, cloth diapers and all the stuff an infant needs for an afternoon out, it may be a bit on the small side. But for us, it was the perfect size for a few small toys, a sippy cup, a diaper or two and snacks. I consider this a great transition bag between the huge diaper bag you might need in the beginning to when you can just throw a couple snacks in your purse.

The bags are available in a bunch of different colours and they are not bulky to carry. Even mr. beans dad can use it and not feel like he is carrying a traditional diaper bag.

Would I recommend this bag? Definitely. I have added this to my list of baby gear must-haves I always share with friends. The Kemby Sidekick is available at a number of retailers in Canada and the U.S. and directly from the Kemby website.
