HeidiKids Toys {review & giveaway}
When you’re a parent of a baby, you quickly realize how they put everything in their mouths. When I first started noticing this, I started to look at what mr. bean was putting in his mouth and playing with. At the same time this was going on, the news was starting to talk about finding lead and other chemicals in toys manufactured in China. Combine this with what seems to be the never ending use of batteries for children’s toys and I was concerned. It was at this point that I decided I would choose toys made from sustainable resources and were safe and fun, and battery free.
HeidiKids is one of these great wooden toy manufacturers that meet all my expectations and more. HeidiKids is a family owned company based here in Vancouver. They design all their toys and have them manufactured in Germany to their guiding principles and values:
Safety
Sustainability
Quality
Educational
Fun
HeidiKids toys are certified according to the European Toys Safety standards EN71. These quality toys also fulfill the requirements for Canadian toys. All paints are water-based and 100% non-toxic and saliva-resistant. All other materials used such as strings, elastics and glues are also non-toxic and child-safe. Any metal parts such as clips and bells are nickel and lead free.
All HeidiKids products are made in Germany under environmentally friendly conditions and using only carefully selected materials. All toys are made from high-quality European wood from renewable resources. Wooden toys are indispensable for the fundamental development of a child’s sensory perception, motor skills and coordination.
I had the opportunity to check out a few of their toys: the Roller Coaster Motorik Rattle, Funky Cat Clip-on, and the Oh Canada Pacifier Holder.
I’ve seen a number of different pacifier holders over the last couple of years, but never one made of wood and lead free paint and that can work for any style of pacifier your little one likes. For the ones that don’t have anything to connect a holder to, you can take the red string of the pacifier holder, loop it around then tighten the string. Now try to find another pacifier holder that can do that! Not only does it hold a pacifier, but it also entertains your little one by fostering a tactile sense for colours and forms. My favourite part of this? The little Canadian Maple Leaf
This is ideal for 0-6 months.

The Roller Coaster Motorik Rattle is a very cool and unique toy for the 6-9 month age. The Motorik Rattle fosters fine motor skills and palm grip while helping your little one improve their concentration and creativity. The pieces all stretch apart and can be twisted. Even at 21 months, my mr. bean had fun playing with it.
The final toy I checked out was the Funky Cat Clip On. This toy is perfect for the 0-3 month age. You can clip it onto a stroller or car seat and this wooden toy will keep your baby occupied without overstimulating her. My little mr. bean would have LOVED this at that age. It’s a perfect item for a baby shower or new baby gift.
For those of your looking to buy a great HeidiKids toy, they are available at these toy retailers in BC.

Kitchen Collage Recipe Binder {review & giveaway}
I am a collector of recipes. Whenever I come across one that sounds yummy, whether it is in the newspaper, sitting in a magazine at the doctor’s office, or in the lunchroom at work, I tear it out. Over the years I have collected a LOT of recipes, but I have not actually tried them all. I think I’m in love with the idea of cooking, but not necessarily cooking. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy cooking and I’ve been told my cooking isn’t that bad, but I don’t often cook the elaborate meals that I tear out of magazines.
When you collect recipes, you tend to have a recipe storage problem. For the longest time I just shoved them in the cupboard. Then I progressed to nicely taping them into a notebook, now I just staple them in. I have looked at proper recipe binders for many years (seriously) but have never found one that I like, they were never just right. That is until I saw the Kitchen Collage Recipe Binder from Galison|Mudpuppy. This binder has everything I need — lots of space for writing recipes, has four conversion tables (so convenient for the Nigella Lawson recipes I tend to collect) and holds regular letter size paper.
The absolute one thing I love about the Galison|Mudpuppy Recipe Binder is that I can print out extra insert sheets whenever I want! Galison/Mudpuppy has made the sheets available for free download right from their site. That is super convenient! If you don’t have a colour printer, you can email the pdf file up to your local copy shop and have as many copies made for you as you like. The recipe binder includes enough sheets for 140 recipes, but it’s always nice to have extra.
In the binder there are 8 full-colour pocket tab dividers — fruits & veggies, breads & pasta, eggs & dairy, soups & salads, meats & poultry, fish & seafood, desserts, and beverages. My only suggestion is that it would be nice to have an ethnic tab. I quite often collect international food recipes and it would be nice if they had their own tab.
And for those of you who love the Kitchen Collage look, you can also purchase a recipe box, coupon organizer (woohoo — need one of these!) and more.
